Tunnels in the stem interior of the host. Larva with conspicuous hooklike process in front, probably a rather enlarged mouthhook but further study is needed. The bulbs of the posterior spiracles of the larva are arranged in a semcircular fanlike configuration. The puparium is narrow for its length, dome-shaped anteriorly and tapering noticeably to the posterior. It overwinters, and adults emerge in spring. Adults are black overall, lacking appreciable iridescence on the abdomen, with some limited brownish coloration on the side of the thorax near where the wing attaches, and with the haltere having a black knob and a brown stem.
